Nappa Leather

Nappa leather refers to particularly supple smooth leather known for its remarkable softness. It is made from various animal hides and is a popular material in the fashion and luxury industries. Originally, the term "Nappa leather" was used for glove and clothing leather produced in Napa Valley, California. Today, however, the term is used as a general designation for soft, full-grain leather from any animal species that is characterized by its exceptional suppleness, softness, and flexibility.

Nappa Leather: Definition and Characteristics

What exactly is Nappa leather?

Nappa leather is chrome-tanned smooth leather that is particularly soft and smooth. It’s important to note that Nappa leather is an umbrella term applied to many types of leather, as long as they meet the required softness and suppleness.

A typical characteristic of Nappa leather is that it retains the natural grain of the animal hide, giving it a unique texture and character.
Nappa leather is processed from the grain side, meaning the side of the hide that faces outward with the hair. (In contrast to suede, where the flesh side of the hide is processed outward.)
The pore density and grain pattern vary across different animal species.

Depending on the surface treatment, there are different types of Nappa leather:

  • Untreated
  • Lightly pigmented
  • Pigmented
  • Sanded

Nubuck leather, like Nappa leather, is another well-known smooth leather type. Nubuck is sanded during processing, resulting in its almost velvety surface. In contrast to soft Nappa leather, Nubuck is firmer and is often used for shoes, bags, or durable leather jackets.

Production and Materials

Nappa leather can be made from various animal hides, with calf, lamb, and sheep leather being the most commonly used.

The type of animal from which the leather is sourced plays an important role in the quality of the final product, as each hide has different properties. The origin of the leather affects its texture and durability. For example, depending on the animal, Nappa leather can have a smoother or rougher surface. Lamb Nappa, for instance, is particularly soft and supple.

The Production of Nappa Leather

The production process of Nappa leather begins with tanning, often using chrome tanning to give the leather its characteristic softness.
The animal hide is tanned, dyed, and finally treated to preserve its natural grain structure and make the leather resistant to external factors like moisture and wear.

Characteristics of Nappa Leather

The popularity of Nappa leather can easily be explained by its numerous positive characteristics. It is incredibly soft, supple, yet robust enough to withstand everyday wear and tear. This combination of comfort and durability makes it a preferred choice in the fashion industry. Nappa leather is especially used in the production of clothing, shoes, gloves, and accessories such as bags.

Another outstanding feature is its breathability, making it ideal for garments that can be worn year-round. Due to its suppleness, it feels soft and comfortable against the skin.

But Nappa leather is not only favoured in fashionβ€”it is also commonly used in interior design for upholstered furniture, where its soft yet durable surface is highly valued.

Its versatility is also evident in the different types of leather, such as lamb Nappa, which is preferred in the clothing industry, or thicker cow Nappa, which is used for sturdy bags and furniture.

Care for Nappa Leather

To maintain the longevity of Nappa leather, careful care is required. Since the leather is sensitive to direct sunlight, it should be protected from such exposure.

For garments made of Nappa leather, always follow the care instructions on the label.
We recommend washing our Nappa leather garments cold on a wool cycle and using the lowest spin setting. The items should be turned inside out, washed with special wool detergent, and not dried in a dryer. To protect them from direct sunlight, they should not be dried in the sun.
