How to care for your cashmere – for lasting quality
Cashmere is a luxurious natural fibre that, with the right care, retains its exceptional softness and quality for many years. To ensure your favourite pieces from IRIS VON ARNIM remain beautiful for a long time, we’ve put together a guide with helpful care tips – tailored to the specific type of cashmere.
Washing – Less is more
Not every cashmere piece is cared for in the same way – the type of cashmere determines the appropriate method of cleaning.
Washing recommendations:
- Wash cashmere only when truly necessary - often airing or gentle steaming is sufficient.
- Brushed Cashmere: Dry clean only, using a gentle process.
- Stonewashed Cashmere: Machine washable on a wool cycle in cold water with the lowest spin setting.
- Use a mild wool or cashmere detergent.
- Wash your pieces inside out.
- Delicate qualities such as Superfine Cashmere are best washed in a laundry bag.
- Wash similar colours together to avoid discolouration.
- Styles with mother-of-pearl buttons should be sent to dry cleaning with button protection.
Our tips for washing:
Important: Always follow the individual care label inside the garment as well as the care instructions provided on the product page in our online shop.
Drying – Reshape with care
Proper drying is essential to maintain the shape and softness of your cashmere piece.
Here is how:
- Gently press out excess water between two towels – do not wring
- Lay flat on a dry towel, reshape carefully and leave to dry flat in the shade
- If the weather allows, dry it outdoors – this naturally refreshes the fibres
Some models may tolerate a gentle wool finish cycle in the dryer – please check the care label first.

Ironing & Steaming – When in doubt, air it out
Cashmere does not require high heat – often, airing the garment is enough to smooth out minor wrinkles.
If ironing is needed:
- Always iron inside out on the lowest setting (wool or silk level)
- Steam can be helpful – unless the care label advises against it
- Delicate types such as Brushed Cashmere should not be ironed, but can be lightly steamed
The care label provides clear guidance on what is best for your garment.
Storage – Elegant protection
Proper storage is key to preserving the beauty and longevity of your cashmere garments.
Our recommendations:
- Always store garments flat, never on hangers, to avoid stretching
- Use breathable cotton storage bags or garment covers
- Place lavender sachets or cedarwood blocks nearby to deter moths and add a fresh scent
- For double-faced pieces or coats: If hanging is unavoidable, use wide, padded hangers
Before putting your garment away for an extended period, wash it or gently air/steam it to remove any residues that may attract moths.

Care & De-pilling – For a lasting luxurious look
Pilling – the formation of small fibre balls – is a natural characteristic of premium natural cashmere, not a flaw.
How to remove pilling gently:
- Comb: Best for precise removal on smooth, fine knits
- Shaver: Works over larger areas – a steady hand is important
- Brush: Refreshes textured surfaces gently without damaging fibres
At a glance:
Regularly check your cashmere pieces and treat them with the appropriate method – this way, your IRIS VON ARNIM cashmere becomes a timeless companion.
